Coping With Financial Loss Because of Personal Injury
Life changes if you or someone you love suffers a workplace injury.
Sometimes we are not prepared. Experts tell you to have enough money in your savings account to pay bills for
three to six months. Many times a work related injury would last much longer than just a few months.
You may think you are ready or prepared to face the mental, emotional, and financial crisis of a workplace
injury. If you are like any normal person, you always think a serious problem like a personal injury or
worker's comp claim happens only to other people. We are confident that we would be adequately prepared for
anything that might happen.
Some states make it compulsory for companies to pay worker's comp premiums. This insurance
is to cover all the medical bills and give him a portion of the wages lost. You may believe you will do fine,
but what if the injury keeps you off work longer than you are prepared for? An injury that seems though it
will need only a few days rest or some rehab turns into an operation, several months of physical rehab, and a long
time off work!
If this happens you need to fashion a plan that will avoid running up credit card bills or
falling behind financially. That isn't always easy to do. The partner may need to find a job or
part-time job but if you are determined to tough it out, there are some things you can do. The first decision
to make is to not buy anything if you can't pay cash for it. You should also make a determination to not
borrow money from anyone and learn to separates your needs from your wants.
If the injury causes you to be off work longer than you planned for, it's time to look for other
ways of bringing in an income. There are plenty of ways to do that if you are determined to make money for
the little extras you may feel you are missing. Worker's comp is designed to pay you while you are off work
because of a work related injury. It may be possible if its decided you are disabled, you are eligible for
SSD and Worker's Comp payments. It will depend on the laws in your state that governs worker's comp
payments.
If there are a few wants you have, look for ways to earn a little extra money and put it away to
buy the item you want. Children and teens should also be made aware of the circumstances and get them
involved in earning money for things they consider "needs." One family started an eBay business and the
spouse began freelance writing to help them through the crunch. There are ways of making extra money if you
have a "want" that you crave!
Most of us live in excess anyway, we are used to eating out whenever we wanted, buying what we
see, and being entertained. All of that is excessive and we can pare down without even flinching if we
try. Make eating out a special time, save for it, and always go somewhere you have a coupon. You can
find coupons in the newspaper ads and on the Internet.
